Crawford W. Long Museum
Crawford W. Long Museum, off the public square at 28 College St., honors Dr. Long who in 1842 performed the first painless surgery using sulfuric ether as an anesthesia. The three-building museum occupies the original site of Dr. Long's discovery, emphasizing his life and the history of anesthesia. The museum includes an antebellum general store. Mayfield Dairy Farm

Northeast Georgia History Center
The center's main exhibit covers 500 years of northeast Georgia history. Highlights include a simulation of the Gainesville Tornado of 1936 and the Sports Hall of Fame. Also featured is the collection of Ed Dodd, creator of the adventure strip "Mark Trail." A collection of works by regional folk pottery families is displayed, and the 1780 cabin of Chief Whitepath is on the grounds. The Georgia Museum of Art
The museum was founded in 1945 when Alfred H. Holbrook donated his collection of 100 American paintings to the university. Now the collection contains more than 10,000 works including 19th-century through contemporary American paintings, Italian Renaissance paintings and an extensive collection of prints and drawings by American, European and Oriental masters. Watson Mill Bridge State Park
Watson Mill Bridge State Park is 3 mi. s. on SR 22 at 650 Watson Mill Rd. A 229-foot four-span covered bridge built in 1885 crosses the South Fork River.
