Things to do in Villa Rica

Annie Powell Berry House
Restored in 2004 and 2005, this 1908 house features many of the original wood floors, much of the millwork and beveled glass. A modern detached garage designed to be historically compatible was built behind the house. Portions of the home were once rented to teachers visiting Villa Rica to teach. The property was considered for use as a Bed & Breakfast, but remains a private residence. The present owner, Valerie Berry Wilhelm, is the granddaughter of the original owners. Downtown Carrollton, A Main Street City
The historic heart of Downtown Carrollton featuring Adamson Square and its surroundings is home to an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, galleries and events. Among the treasures here is Georgia's oldest bookstore, Horton's Books and Gifts. Purchases are still rung up on the business' 1890s cash register and many of the store's wares are displayed on original bookcases and display cases used when N.A. Horton opened his doors in 1892. McIntosh Reserve Park
Over 14 miles of multi-use trails wind through the reserve and alongside the Chattahoochee River, which forms the southern boundary. Hikers, bicycle enthusiasts, and equestrians can enjoy these trails year round. Model airplane enthusiasts will enjoy the grass airstrip located in the lower park near the camping area, and kids will like fishing in one of two ponds or the Chattahoochee River. Rafting and canoeing is allowed with access to the river at Whitesburg. Family reunions, picnics, weddings, birthday parties, and special events take advantage of the unique scenery in this riverside park, and all of these activities, including primitive camping can be arranged through park staff. During the summer season, the Spray and Splash water park is open to children from 10 am until 6 pm daily for a small fee. Call (770) 830-5879 for more information.

Wicks Tavern
Dating from the 1830s, Wicks Tavern is the oldest commercial structure in the county. The tavern was built by New York immigrant John B. Wick in Gold Village, better known as “Hixtown” or “Old Town.” It was initially used as a bar and hotel for travelers and is a classic example of the “Dutch”-style timber framing method. After the arrival of the Georgia-Pacific Railroad in 1882, a number of homes and buildings were rolled from Hixtown to the present site on Villa Rica. The tavern, however, was too large to be moved at the time and was later turned into a home. In 1998, the “Friends of Wick’s Tavern” made the journey to the downtown area. Wick Tavern now serves as a living history museum. Call (770) 456-0201 for more information.
